Xigera became the latest Eddie Woods training grad to earn a graded stakes win on Saturday, Oct. 28 when the 3-year-old filly dominated the $250,000 Mother Goose S. (G2) at Aqueduct.
Trained by Philip Bauer for Rigney Racing LLC, Xigera had tallied a pair of listed wins earlier this year, including a 6 ¼-length romp last month in the $175,000 Seneca S. at Churchill Downs.
Sent off the even-money favorite in the Mother Goose, Xigera sat just a length behind the eager Undervalued Asset through the first six furlongs. Coming to the quarter pole, Xigera and Defining Purpose, winner of the Ashland S. (G1), went by a withering Undervalued Asset. After a brief tussle, Xigera strode clear powerfully to finish the 1 1/8-miles in 1:48.99 on a fast main track.
“The hindsight is the easiest sight, so now that it’s done, it was the right decision [to come here rather than the Breeders Cup Distaff],” said Phil Bauer. “I’m overwhelmed. It’s a pretty cool race historically. It was the right decision and hopefully, it will springboard her to a 4-year-old campaign that has been as impressive as her last two races.”
Bred in Kentucky by Cedar Hill LLC, Xigera is 5-1-1 in nine starts, including four of five this year, and has earned $576,601. The dark bay filly is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Forty Under.
