Eddie Woods training grad Xigera extended her stakes winning streak to three Thanksgiving Day at Churchill Downs with a thoroughly dominating victory in the $400,000 Falls City S. (G3).
The 3-year-old filly, who was facing older stakes distaffers for the first time, has won five of six starts this year, including four stakes races. Her lifetime mark stands at 6-1-1 in 10 starts, with earnings of $817,056 for Rigney Racing LLC.
Sent away the heavy favorite in the nine-furlong contest, Xigera sat patiently behind the speed until being called on with three furlongs to run. She came three-wide into the homestretch, quickly taking the lead and opening up on the field. She widened the rest of the way, winning by 6 ½-lengths in 1:50.75 on a fast track.
“She’s a special type of horse which makes our job easy,” said trainer Phil Bauer. “You hang a bridle on her and she knows what she needs to do. I’m so fortunate to be in the position I am with a great stable and owner. At the time we thought grass was her preferred surface as a 2-year-old, but she’s proven us wrong. She has such a quick turn of foot which makes her so dynamic.”
Xigera, who sold for $190,000 as a Keeneland yearling, was bred in Kentucky by Cedar Hill LLC. a
