Winterfell came from far back to win the $100,000 City of Laurel at Laurel Park on Nov. 30 to become the third Eddie Woods training program graduate to win a stakes race on the last weekend of November.

Winterfell, who was making his stakes debut follow sharp maiden and allowance wins, cut back from two turns to seven furlongs for the City of Laurel. He was unhurried out of the gate and dropped back to last in the field of nine. The gray/roan colt was still about 10 lengths from the lead with three furlongs to go, when he began cutting into the margin. Coming six-wide into the stretch, he rolled down the center of the track to blow by the field and win by two lengths in 1:22.61 on a fast track.

“Against 3-year-olds, it made sense. Obviously it was a cutback, but he trains forwardly in the morning and if you get the right setup as we did today, we thought it was something in his wheelhouse,” trainer Brittany Russell said. “It was always going to be sit a trip and try and pick them up. He came running and he did it nicely.”

Owned by SF Racing, Starlight Racing, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, Dianne Bashor, Robert Masterson, Waves Edge Capital, Catherine Donovan and Tom Ryan, Winterfell upped his record to 3-1-1 in eight starts and has earned $147,040.

A son of the brilliant Arrogate, Winterfell was bred by Adirondack Bloodstock.
