Multi-millionaire Whitmore won the $350,000 Count Fleet S. (G3) on Apr. 18 at Oaklawn Park for a record third time in his career, pushing the Eddie Woods training grad over the $3 million mark in lifetime earnings.
The 7-year-old also has taken four renditions of Oaklawn's Hot Springs S., plus a career-defining win in the Forego S. (G1) at Saratoga. A son of Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) winner Pleasantly Perfect, Whitmore is owned by Robert LaPenta, Southern Springs Stables and Head of Plains Partners LLC. He has earned $3,146,350.
With racing canceled across much of the country, Whitmore faced a Grade 1-quality field in the Count Fleet. Breaking from post 9 in the 11-horse field, Whitmore was mid-pack behind a torrid pace down the backstretch. He made a big three-wide move on the turn, taking over the lead in upper stretch and held off Flagstaff by three-quarters of length at the wire.
The final time for the six furlongs was a very rapid 1:08.95 on fast track.
“I'm proud for him,” said winning trainer Ron Moquett. “I'm noticing lately people saying, 'The great' and 'legendary.' People that are saying that don't throw around those words. To me, he's been that.”
Whitmore was bred in Kentucky by John Liviakis. He was the first foal out of Melody's Spirit, who has been bred to Liam's Map, Arrogate and Uncle Mo over the past three seasons.
