Gainesway Stable homebred White Frost made her stakes debut in the $100,000 Sweetest Chant S. (G3) Jan. 30 at Gulfstream Park and came away with a one-length victory after a dramatic stretch run.
The Eddie Woods training grad had broken her maiden in her prior outing Nov. 21 at Aqueduct and has now won both her starts on the grass while earning $123,920.
White Frost had plenty of obstacles in the one-mile trip for 3-year-old fillies. She got boxed in very tight quarters going into the first turn and was relegated to near the back of the field as they entered the backstretch. Jockey Junior Alvarado was still looking for a way forward around the final bend. Finally making her way between horses at the top of the stretch, White Frost surged to the front to run down favored Con Lima and finish the distance in a solid 1:34.45 on the firm turf.
“It was pretty exceptional, because they hadn’t gone that fast early so you figure everyone’s going to be running home a little bit,” trainer Bill Mott's assistant Kenny McCarthy said. “Once Junior put her in the clear, she really accelerated and showed them a nice clean pair of heels.”
White Frost is the second foal out of Miss Frost, herself a two-time stakes winner from the family of millionaire grass horse Hap.
