Eddie Woods training center graduate Upper Case joined the ranks of stakes winners with a decisive
victory in Saturday’s $300,000 Dream Supreme S. at Churchill Downs.
Making her stakes debut, Upper Case settled off the early pace early, racing in hand for jockey Evin
Roman. She saved ground through the turn, angled out nearing the three-sixteenths pole, and finished
strongly in the lane. She forged clear in the late stages of the six-furlong test to score by 1 ¾ lengths,
stopping the clock in a brisk 1:09.88.
Owned by Larry Best’s OXO Equine LLC, the 4-year-old filly is a daughter of American Pharoah out of the
Smart Strike mare Rigged Smart. Bred in Kentucky by Thor-Bred Stables, Upper Case has finished in the
top three in 10-of-14 lifetime starts. The $183,450 winner’s share of the Dream Supreme purse raised
her career bankroll to $393,964.
“She’s like a fine wine and getting better with age,” said winning trainer Paulo Lobo. “We were glad to
get this stakes win with her today. She has run well at Turfway in the past and it could be a possibility
getting her back there this winter. We had talked about possibly retiring her but we will talk to Mr. Best
and make a decision about what to do next.”
