When Scotland came home a 2 ¼-length winner in Sunday’s $250,000 Cherokee Mile S. at Churchill Downs, he became the fourth Eddie Woods training program grad to win a stakes over the Thanksgiving weekend.
The chestnut 4-year-old, who won last year’s Curlin S. at Saratoga, is now 5-3-1 in 13 starts and has earned $555,560 for his owner/breeder LNJ Foxwoods.
After a clean start in the one-turn mile under the lights, Scotland settled nicely in fourth for the long backstretch run. He was about three lengths off the lead after a half-mile, and made up ground around the turn to be just off the top spot after turning for home. In the final furlong, Scotland and Injunction battled closely until Scotland edged clear late to get the win in 1:34.60 on a fast track.
“He’s a part of LNJ Foxwoods’s homebred program and it’s very special to win another stakes with him,” said trainer Bill Mott’s assistant Kenny McCarthy. “He’s a very classy horse and really handled the one-turn mile well. When we got him down here to Churchill Downs a couple weeks ago from New York he looked great and has really thrived since being in Kentucky.”
Scotland is a son of Good Magic out of the Grade 3 winner Gemswick Park.
