Eddie Woods training grad Rockefeller got his first career stakes win in Aqueduct’s Nashua S. (G3) on Sunday, going gate-to-wire to take the $150,000 race for 2-year-olds by 2 ¾-lengths.
Rockefeller, trained by Bob Baffert, got some early pressure from Speaking, who was just a half-length behind after a half-mile in :46.75. Cooke Creek mounted a challenge in upper stretch, but Rockefeller shook him off to win going away in 1:36.66 for the mile on the fast main track.
“I knew the other horses would break from there running, but we have a lot of speed, so Bob told me to break from there and send him and see if they can keep with us,” said winning jockey Luis Saez. “That was the plan, to break from there running. He kept at it. He’s a very talented horse. He’s still learning but he has a lot of talent. I think he’s going to be a nice horse.”
Rockefeller now boasts two wins from three starts with earnings of $142,500 for SF Racing, Starlight Racing LLC, Madaket Stables, Stonestreet Stables, and Mast. The son of Medaglia d’Oro is the latest foal of Ballerina S. (G1) winner Dance to Bristol.
