Woods Training Program grad and Alpha Delta Stables, LLC homebred Raging Sea surged past champion Idiomatic in the final strides to win the $500,000 Personal Ensign S. (G1) Aug. 24 at Saratoga.
With the win, Raging Sea surpassed the $1 million mark in career earnings ($1,060,978) and now has four graded stakes wins to her credit.
Soon after the break, Idiomatic and Xigera hooked up in an early pace battle as they made their way through a half-mile in :46.66, with Raging Sea some 15 lengths from the lead. Idiomatic shook clear with three furlongs to run and looked home free turning into the stretch. Raging Sea had other ideas though, making up four lengths in the final furlong to win by a head in 1:49.14 for the nine furlongs on a fast track.
“Raging Sea, it was her day today, and she ran down a real champion,” said winning trainer Chad Brown. “I’m just so proud of her, so happy for Mr. Jon Clay, who bred this horse and actually RNA’d her as a yearling. He believed in her, sent her in to us, and she’s really had a great career. Very rarely has she disappointed us. It’s easy to be patient when you have a good owner like John. We rested her this winter, we brought her back and she’s one of those horses that’s just constantly improved--her pedigree would say she would. Obviously, we saw the best of her today.”
Raging Sea’s previous stakes wins came in the Shuvee S. (G2), Doubledogdare S. (G3) and Comely S. (G3). Her overall record is 6-1-1 in 11 starts.
Brown said the Oct. 6 Spinster S. (G1) at Keeneland would be Raging Sea’s next start.
