Eddie Woods training grad Newgrange wrapped up 2023 with a convincing win in the Dec. 26 San Antonio S. (G2) at Santa Anita Park, the fourth graded stakes win in the 4-year-old’s career.
Facing four foes in the 1 1/16-mile contest, Newgrange stalked the pace set by Brickyard Ride, never more than a length behind through the first six furlongs. He came on even terms with the pacesetter on the final turn, then took over the lead coming into the stretch and was never threatened, winning by 2 ¼-lengths over Mixto in 1:42.79 on a fast track.
“This horse is starting to round into form,” said winning trainer Phil D'Amato. “I think the long layoff did him some good. I know he likes Santa Anita. He was better the other day and he put it all together I think we will point him toward [a repeat in] the San Pasqual next.”
Newgrange was making his third start after being away from the races from March through October. Winner of the San Pasqual S. (G2) in January, Newgrange won both the Southwest S. (G3) and Sham S. (G3) as a 3-year-old. His overall record is 6-0-4 in 12 starts, with earnings of $887,634 for owners David Bernsen LLC, Little Red Feather Racing and Rockingham Ranch.
