Lightning Tones kicked off his 5-year-old campaign with a last-to-first victory in the Jan. 11 Sunshine Classic S. at Gulfstream Park.

The Eddie Woods training program grad, who also won the 2023 Carry Back S., is now 5-6-4 in 26 starts and has bankrolled $236,730 for John Sanguinetti’s J C Racing Stable and trainer Carlos Narvaez.

Lightning Tones, who usually does his best running from well off the early pace, followed that pattern once again in Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile contest. He trailed the field of seven through six furlongs as One Sharp Cookie controlled the pace, getting the first three-quarters in 1:12.21.

Midway on the final turn, Lightning Tones began passing horses quickly and was just a length off the lead turning for home. He rolled past One Sharp Cookie soon after and was drawing away at the end to win by 1 ¼-lengths.

The winner was bred in Florida by H & A Stables LLC.
