Woods Training Program graduate Iron Man Cal was elevated to the top spot in the $100,000 Zuma Beach S. (G3) for 2-year-olds at Santa Anita on Saturday, Oct. 6, giving the son of Collected a stakes victory in his black-type debut.
Artislas, the lone stakes winner in the field heading into the Zuma Beach, got his head down on the wire to win in a tight three-way photo. But a late bump from Artislas nearly dropped jockey Antonio Fresu aboard Iron Mal Cal, leading to the disqualification.
“I thought the bump I received cost me a lot,” Fresu said after the race. “He (Iron Man Cal) got scared and kind of stopped. You could tell by my body language I was knocked off balance. I think it cost me.
Iron Man Cal is trained by Phil D’Amato for owners Little Red Feather Racing and Madaket Stables.
“I’m definitely proud of my horse,” D’Amato said. “He was bounced around there. Antonio almost got knocked out of the saddle. But the horse hung in there tough.”
The next target for Iron Man Cal, now a winner in 2-of-3 lifetime starts and an earner of $109,500, is likely the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. Iron Man Cal broke his maiden by 2 ½ lengths going a mile at Del Mar in his previous start. By Collected out of the Kitten’s Joy mare Joyful Dreams, Iron Man Cal was bred in Kentucky by Brereton C. Jones.
