Heavenly Sunday became the second Eddie Woods Stables training grad to earn a graded stakes win in as many days Friday at Churchill Downs when the 3-year-old filly cruised to victory in the Mrs. Revere S. (G3).
Her victory came one day after Woods grad Xigera won the Falls City S. (G3) in dominating fashion.
Heavenly Sunday, who won the Edgewood S. (G2) over the Churchill Downs lawn this past Derby Day, is 4-2-2 in nine lifetime starts, while earning $708,683 for William Harrigan’s Micacomet Farm.
Heavenly Sunday hustled out of the gate from her outside post in the field of nine to take up a spot in second going around the first turn. The dark bay filly was under mild restraint down the backstretch before being given her cue on the final bend. She easily went by Callie’s Grit to take the lead coming into the stretch and was hand-ridden to the wire, winning by five lengths in 1:44.69 for the 1 1/16-miles on a fast track.
"(She) always worked well on the dirt,” said winning trainer Brad Cox. “We started her first time on the grass and she did nothing wrong on it so we just kept her on that surface. When (the Mrs. Revere) came off I always say my favorite races are dirt races and my second favorite are off the turf so there we go it worked out well."
The winner was bred in Kentucky by Randal Family Trust and is the second foal out of the stakes-placed Giant’s Causeway mare Alien Giant.
