First Captain rolled by Ridin with Biden in midstretch on his way to a 1 3/4-length victory in Monday's $250,000 Dwyer S. (G3) at Belmont Park.
The Eddie Woods training grad, who cost $1.5 million as a yearling, has won all three of his starts and is likely to make his next start at Saratoga in the Jim Dandy (G2, July 31) or the Travers (G1, Aug. 28).
First Captain was making his stakes debut following maiden and allowance wins over same Belmont surface. Ridin With Biden went out to set the pace, while First Captain set several lengths off the front-runner through a half-mile in :46.67. First Captain began to make his move for the lead with three furlongs to go, coming three wide into the stretch. Ridin With Biden provided a challenge in upper stretch, but began to fade late, and First Captain drew off to finish the mile in 1:36.19 on a fast track.
“He was behind horses and took some dirt,” winning jockey Jose Ortiz said. “They were running. They went [fast early] and when I put him in the clear, it took me awhile to get into high gear, but when he did it, he used that beautiful stride of his. He went by them as he is supposed to and he galloped out really good. I think he's going to improve with distance.”
First Captain has now banked $237,600 in his three wins for West Point Thoroughbreds, Siena Farms, Bobby Flay and Woodford Racing LLC. Flay is also the breeder of the son of Curlin, who is the first foal out of graded stakes winner America.
