Eddie Woods training program grad Coppola won his second consecutive stakes race Saturday at Gulfstream Park with a gutsy half-length victory in the $100,000 Silks Run S.
The 5-year-old son of Into Mischief, who won the $125,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint over the same course and distance a month ago, had to thread his way between horses in the final furlong Saturday to earn the win. He sat just off the pace early before hitting his best stride with a furlong to go, outrunning both Panther Island and Yes I Am Free, who dead-heated for the place spot.
“He ran like that before (from off the pace),” said trainer Dale Romans. “He’s so fast leaving there, you don’t want to take him back all the time. But if there’s a lot of speed and he can sit off of them, than that’s the best.”
Coppola is a very solid 7-1-1 in 18 lifetime starts and has earned $497,933 for his owners Hammer Time Stable and S.O.K. Racing.
