Cabo Spirit and jockey Abel Cedillo scored a front-running victory in the $750,000 California Crown John Henry Turf Championship S. (G2) Sept. 28 at Santa Anita Park to give the Eddie Woods training program grad his third graded stakes win.

The 5-year-old also became racing’s newest millionaire with the win. His record now stands at 5-3-6 in 27 starts, with earnings of $1,035,336 for owner Kretz Racing LLC. The son of Pioneerof the Nile was bred by WinStar Farm.

Cedillo gave Cabo Spirit a masterful ride. After getting the lead soon after the start, he was able to slow the pace, going six furlongs in 1:15.13 and a mile in 1:39.06. When asked to pick up the pace, Cabo Spirit responded strongly, coming home a one-length winner over There Goes Harvard in 2:01.26 for the 1 ¼-miles on the firm turf.

“The goal was to make the lead and if another horse sped ahead, let them go,” Cedillo said. “If not, the plan was always to get to the front and then try to slow down. That’s exactly what we did.”

Cabo Spirit’s previous graded wins came in the Twilight Derby (G2) and La Jolla S. (G3). He also has wins in the Eddie Logan S. and Butch Gleason S.
